Underground Bold

Bold steps forward with a firmness that feels unmistakably civic. The strokes gain weight without losing the humanist warmth and open rhythm that define Johnston’s original vision, so the voice remains clear rather than heavy. In layouts, it establishes hierarchy quickly—ideal for titles, signage systems, and moments that need authority—while Regular and Medium handle the supporting text with ease. Set large, its rounded forms and measured proportions show their heritage; set smaller, it retains impressive legibility. Bold also pairs naturally with the true italics, where emphasis feels considered rather than abrupt, creating a cohesive, historically grounded palette.
