Underground Bold Italic

Underground Bold Italic carries the family’s strongest voice into a distinctly calligraphic register. The weight has real authority, yet the italic’s drawn forms—imagined through Johnston’s own hand—introduce movement and a subtle warmth that never feels mechanical. Strokes lean with purpose, not haste, giving emphasis without sacrificing clarity.

Within the family, it serves as a dynamic counterpoint to Bold Roman, adding contrast in identity systems, directional graphics, and layered typographic compositions. Use it to signal urgency, highlight key messages, or bring a human pulse to otherwise structured layouts.
