I LANSTON TYPE COMPANY I GERALD GIAMPA I

GERALD GIAMPA'S Bodoni 26 earned the enviable position by personal review from Paul Shaw to be one of 'The Top 100 Types of All Time' Type Directors Club of New York (TDC).

IN THE ENTRANCE of the Jugendsali in Helsinki. This is the so-called Ushakoff House where Giampa rests on his treks through Helsinki waiting for the wooden sailing ships to be free of winter's ice.

NOTE: Stone men in relief by Robert Stigellin. No, not me, don't be silly.

I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO MY MOTHER

SOMETIMES, TOO OFTEN I WONDER why I wasted my time in typography. An art where its critics have enthusiastically confused technology for craft. An art where its critics think craft is something you stir into your tea!

Critics should not be so reckless, or sometimes perhaps, so generous? How is it that my typeface Bodoni 26 is listed under review as one of 'The Top 100 Types of All Time' by the Type Directors' Club of New York? Although it is a respectable typeface it came easily following my torturous Caslon 337 revival?

Once again, thank you Paul. As you can see, I am humbled by this great honour, I have never considered myself to be a type designer, but neither did Bruce Rogers. Himself I mean, he never knew me.

Bruce Rogers' Metropolitan Oldstyle is by far superior to Bodoni 26. Whereas I more than equal Rogers in our mutual passions for typographical fleurons.

I wonder if I could suggest a new category to the Type Directors' Club? I wonder if they could be made interested in fleurons?
